The Miami Children’s Chorus, in partnership with the Adrienne Arsht Center and the Music Office of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools facilitated a professional development opportunity for teachers and college students on Friday, October 26, 2012 on the stage of the Knight Concert Hall. Dr. Judy Bowers of Florida State University was the workshop clinician for the day. All the teachers were amazed at the non-stop flow of practical information they received. Singing through the voluminous choral literature provided by the MCC and the Arsht Center was also of note.
Dr. Bowers’ interactive presentation was full of functional information for practicing and emerging educators. Her explanations were simple and on point. She began by taking the teachers through voicing the choir, then how to help them gain harmonic independence. From there we learned the highly useful “Rules for Expressive Singing”. These rules can be learned by the children and helps expedite the learning of the language of artistic performance. In the afternoon we learned the nuts and bolts of educational practice by studying the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy and how to organize time for maximum usage. This was a very productive day for the teachers and college students in Miami-Dade County. We look forward to having Dr. Bowers back again soon.
